Our Initiatives
At the Inukshuk Foundation our goal is to fill in the gaps in community services and programs across Canada to help at risk youth complete their education.
Since reinstating our charity status in 2009 we've been hard at work to get our first initiative off the ground: creating Inukshuk Fields in Scarborough, Ontario. With your donations we can make our first project a solid success.
Inukshuk Fields, Scarborough
The city of Scarborough has seen one of the most rapid and dramatic increases of high-poverty neighbourhoods in the Greater Toronto Area. As a result, Scarborough has one of the highest populations of at risk youth in Ontario.
These facts make initiatives like the Scarborough Inukshuk Fields so important.
We're building an indoor soccer training facility that offers a safe space for youth at risk to go before and after school. In addition to giving kids a positive outlet, the Inukshuk Fields in Scarborough will be able to take in kids who have been suspended from school. Every year in Ontario over 200,000 suspensions are issued, 42% are from elementary schools when students are at their most vulnerable. Recent school policy changes have made it easier for students to attend alternative programming, but most suspensions are too short to qualify.
The Inukshuk Fields in Scarborough fills this gap by arranging for suspended students to go directly to the centre. We then coordinate with school principals, trustees, and parents to make sure kids arrive at the centre, if necessary, driven by Inukshuk staff. Once there they'll have a trained counselor to give them a structured routine for however long their suspension is.
By offering a strong foundation through sport the Inukshuk Fields makes sure that all students, no matter what their circumstances, can focus their energy on positive activity.
Help make a difference in Scarborough by donating today.
